Whenever I hear Renée Fleming singing with her ravishing beautiful soprano, for me the sun is shining a little bit brighter, the sky is bluer and the meadows are greener. This never happened to me with any other soprano except (but seldom) the great Renate Holm with her equally beautiful voice in 'Der Vogelhändler'.

Fleming was 52 here: the voice was no longer in its prime, having lost flexibility, power and a degree of beauty. Anyone in any doubt about her suitability to the role, should look for clips or a full broadcast of her singing it in 1998 at La Scala... It is astonishing.

The whole first scene is miss-lit. It is so dark it must be night or they are in a cave. The singing is excellent from the three principals. But their work is sabotaged by the stage scene.
