Jose van Dam, baritone, Gustav Mahler: Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen.
Words by Friedrich Ruckert
Images are mostly from the 1988 Gerard Corbeau film Le Maitre de Musique.
(Note: The finale of the film is hauntingly beautiful, both with the ethereal images on the lake and with Mahlers remarkable song, sung in van Dams rich-baritone voice, along with the exquisite orchestration. As a film it works, although the bouncing images of the tenor and soprano inside the coach leaving the estate somewhat distract the viewer from the music and the mysterious images over the lake. Also, the soundtrack is only a short excerpt from the song. I, therefore, felt motivated to reconstruct the images to fit the complete song.)
In meinem Lieben, in meinem Lied!
I am lost to the world
with which I used to waste so much time,
It has heard nothing from me for so long
that it may very well believe that I am dead!
It is of no consequence to me
Whether it thinks me dead;
I cannot deny it,
for I really am dead to the world.
I am dead to the world's tumult,
And I rest in a quiet realm!
I live alone in my heaven,
In my love and in my song!
