With stagnant wages, rising cost of living (see shelter inflation), and a lack of savings, Americans are retiring later than ever before (if at all). But in a double-whammy for seniors, whose health is declining, their lifespans are shrinking offering them little if any time to enjoy the end of the American Dream walking hand in hand into the sunset on a faraway beach...
As Bloomberg reports, data released last week suggest Americans’ health is declining and millions of middle-age workers face the prospect of shorter, and less active, retirements than their parents enjoyed.
Here are the stats:
The U.S. age-adjusted mortality rate - a measure of the number of deaths per year - rose 1.2 percent from 2014 to 2015, according to the Society of Actuaries.
That’s the first year-over-year increase since 2005, and only the second rise greater than 1 percent since 1980.
At the same time that Americans’ life expectancy is stalling, public policy and career tracks mean millions of U.S. workers are waiting longer to call it quits.
Almost one in three Americans age 65 to 69 is still working, along with almost one in five in their early 70s.
And finally, Americans in their late 50s already have more serious health problems than people at the same ages did 10 to 15 years ago, according to the journal Health Affairs.
Bloomberg's Ben Steverman points out that researchers have offered many theories for why Americans’ health is getting worse. Princeton University economists Anne Case and Angus Deaton, a Nobel Prize winner, have argued that an epidemic of suicide, drug overdoses and alcohol abuse have caused a spike in death rates among middle-age whites.
Higher rates of obesity may also be taking their toll. And Americans may have already seen most of the benefits from previous positive developments that cut the death rate, such as a decline in smoking and medical advances like statins that fight cardiovascular disease.
So there you have it - The New American Dream: Work Longer, Live Sicker, Die Sooner...

Change your mindset, change the game | Dr. Alia Crum | TEDxTraverseCity; 18:20 min.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tqq66zwa7g
Published on Oct 15, 2014
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Dr. Crum says the biggest game changer is “YOU, by harnessing the power of your mind." She explores scientific results that show the influence of the mindset on the body, and how changing the subjective mindset produced different outcomes. Dr. Crum's work is inspired in part by the placebo effect, and has implications that stretch far beyond the realm of medicine.
Dr. Crum is a professor, psychologist, and researcher investigating how mindsets affect health and behavior.
Dr. Crum's research focuses on how changes in subjective mindsets—the lenses through which information is perceived, organized, and interpreted—can alter objective reality through behavioral, psychological, and physiological mechanisms. Her work is, in part, inspired by research on the placebo effect, a notable and consistent demonstration of the ability of the mindset to elicit healing properties in the body. She is interested in understanding how mindsets affect important outcomes outside the realm of medicine, in the domains of behavioral health and organizational behavior.

What a great speech. You mean to say that what I see, hear or eat or hear can have a positive effect every time based on my mind set. That is amazing ! So if my boss is putting me down I can see the benefits and dwell on the positive at my job. Wow I can see that my attitude is my best friend.

No matter what negativity you find in this comment section, rest assured that you treaded on ground that few of us would attempt and did a great job. You're showing what we all must do......lean into our vulnerabilities and fears. Thumbs up from me.

Carol Bates, Yes, it was the "picture" she described - the medical procedure, unfortunately (rewatch to check). I am a public speaker and once was in a situation like that. You can find one more example of that in a book of another great scientist Dan Ariely (in his book he describes what happened to him when he touched a topic like that, when he was delivering a lecture. Considering his own previous experience the effect was even more excruciating - he could not say a word with out tears at all). If you are going to deliver a public speech you probably better remember about this - the presence of all those people watching you amplifies incredibly the amplitude of emotional arousal. All the topics (examples / descriptions of experiments) that may upset you (like surgery and patient care after that in this case) would produce immense damage (unless you were desensitized through hundreds of special sessions and undergone other very important procedures to talk about such topics - and even then no 100% guarantee).

The exercise example made me wonder. I have seen people - my grandmothers, for instance, whose daily chores involved a lot of physical activity. Neither of them considered it as some form of workout or expected to receive some benefit, yet they were still in good shape. I don't understand what role mindset plays here. If you do the work, your body will respond, expect it or not. I don't think mindset has much of a role there. But perhaps I don't understand that example well enough. Can anyone explain where I'm going wrong (if I am, that is)?
Another question - is the converse true? For example, if someone regularly eats something very calorie-dense and unhealthy, while believing that it is low fat, healthy or low in calorie value, will the body respond in the way the person expects it to? Anyone remember the case of Regina George and the Kalteen bars? Because if this was so, all the unhealthy sugary cereal and other stuff marketed as low cal, nutrient rich food would have worked. So while there certainly is a strong mind-bodh connection, mindset may not be everything. At least in the case of food and exercise, your body eventually figures it out. Or does it not?

Amazing! This is what some people call the law of attraction. What we think becomes our reality. We are responsible for everything happening to us in our lives. Most of our thoughts however come from our subconscious mind, which makes it more difficult to control. Dr Alia Crum, would you teach us how to shift our mindset?

I have just shifted to the mindset that it is not true that blondes are stupid. LOL. JUST KIDDING. I love blondes. And I have known for the longest time that they are smart. And many of them have hearts that are so compassionate and kind especially to the needy people of this world. And hey, I love brunettes and red heads too. And I can say the same thing for some of them regarding having hearts of gold.
Dr. Alia Crum did not only give much information to help us be aware of the power that we have over our minds and bodies, but she also showed us that she walks her talk. She was clearly nervous and her voice was clearly shaking. But she went out there and, despite her fear of public speaking, she took on a positive mindset and gave information that can help so many of us. God bless her.

The art of doing twice as much in half the time | Jeff Sutherland; 15:49 min.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4thQcgLCqk
Published on Jul 7, 2014
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Co-writer of the Agile Manifesto, Jeff Sutherland is one of the world's leading experts of organizational management. He'll explain how to be agile, not just in software development but in every business to disrupt the field.
A former US Air Force "Top Gun," Jeff Sutherland is the co-creator of the SCRUM process. This methodology, developed in 1993 and formalized in 1995 with Ken Schwaber, has since been adopted by the vast majority of software development companies around the world.
Jeff is a leading expert on how the framework has evolved to meet the needs of today's business. Realizing its benefits are not limited to software development, he has adapted this strategy to several other industries including: finance, healthcare and telecom. His processes are now widely used for managing challenging projects and hyperproductive development teams.
As the CEO of Scrum Inc. and the Senior Advisor and Agile Coach to OpenView Venture Partners, Jeff shares best practices with organisations around the globe.

I totally get what your saying, but just spitballing to try and figure things out:
The first question is - do you really see your work? Are you seeing the end goal (landing the plane/project)? Are you recognizing what your doing that is not working towards that? I know I often don't. I can see for an individual that it could be interesting to break yourself into a team. For instance, in a project, there's always the bits the tie it off - filing key information, making the notations so you can come back to it later if necessary. For me, I'm already onto a new project because I'm bored and tired of the old one. But if I break it down and put on my "administrative hat" and get it down, I find that it often benefits me in the long term.
Sometimes we start something and work linearly, thinking we need to do x before y. If you get bogged down on x or don't want to do it, then you never get to y. But often, we can do y without finishing x, and maybe y is more exciting to us. So we work that way (this is like the insect robot thing - sometimes if it's not working at the brain level, we can get the parts to move on its own first).
Just some thoughts.

Jeff has changed the world for sure, but this talk is really just him piquing the interest of managers to hire his company to get into modern practices and processes. Of course he isn't going to give all the detailed answers "how", that's what his product is, that information. BUT anyone can look online for AGILE or SCRUM and in 10 minutes have the basic gist of the HOW. Interesting that it can be applied even to kids in school, not just to software developers.

You're right - it's not a TEDtalk; it's a TEDx talk. Nevertheless, I do wonder if he titled it. In the context of the groups he mentions working with, it sounds like they did get 'get twice as much done in half the time'. That said, it is disappointing that his talk shed almost no light on how to do that as an individual.

You clearly missed the actual fact of the matter by a long shot. We already have multiple cures, but there is a lot of propaganda against those and in favor of the largely ineffective treatments that are currently used, and the "research" done by those in the Mainstream is all nonsense that we are dishonestly told is research but which is really not actually happening at all. It makes sense since there is a lot of money in people having carcinogens promoted to them so that they develop cancer and then hiding or lying about the actual cures while giving them ineffective treatments.

So what exactly is the take-away from his presentation? Hire this fellow as a consultant to tell me how to be more efficient? I don't mean to be a jerk, but I'm not sure what his point is.

Don't slide off the runway, land the plane PROPERLY.

And you need to constantly monitor the weather of your project, forgot that part.

Plans are worthless; planning is everything. Land the plane...something something, robots, Japanese professors...something. I watched this video twice so you don't have to. No discernible point here...move along.

Okay, here's my take on this talk. TL;DW(atch) 1. Make your problems visible to make it possible to find solutions. Listing them in real space 2. Solve them incrementally, rather than all at once. 3. If working on a team, make sure everyone's pulling their own weight within those pieces (I think?)

Good general identifying of the elements of the talk, the details aka "how" can be easily found if you search for "SCRUM" and "AGILE" even some under-10-minutes videos on YT illustrate practical activities to accomplish those goals...

Bad presentation, scattered and talking around the subject. I still have no idea what he`s talking about.

He's saying that the best way to get things done is to split things up into teams. Not commanded teams though, organized teams that have been trained to know that they're doing and not bother with what other people are doing, and do what they need to with little to no managerial work.

+Zachery Iodice He should have said that in the first few minutes instead of bragging about his resume so much.

Came here to improve my efficiency and time management. Got this shit, where he just brags about what he did and not told us a thing about the title.

Probably the single worst talk I think I have ever heard. What a rambling bunch of drivel. I have absolutely no idea what he was on about. "I was in the military, i flew a plane, i worked at a bank, I ate some sushi" blah blah blah. This is why no one wants to listen to old people - they use too many words to say very little.

why do I keep wasting TED videos. based on my research they suck about 89%of the time. maybe if the title had been "war vet tells us about his many accomplishments in the world of organization," I would have enjoyed the video. To those who are smarter than I, who read the comments before watching, save your time. There is not one sentence of practical usable advice in this talk.

They should have titled this video "how to waste almost 16 minutes of your life".

In summary, life is like landing an aeroplane. You have to keep repeating (or drill) the landing exercise and re-adjusting until you get it right as you do also living your life.
The highlight of his talk was Vietnam war experience. He survived the missile attack by making his flight path maneuvering unpredictable for the missile when entering Vietnam. Only 50% of the pilots survived and came back.
He advocates for the management giving initial instructions, then stepping back from managing and allowing the teams to come up with solutions.
There is some merit with his talk.

Guys, the title is wrong that is why you misunderstood what it is about. This is Jeff Sutherland, the inventor of SCRUM. The words he says are pure gold for every IT guy. YouTube, Facebook, Instagram - those are HUGE projects and you can use those applications thanks to THIS man. It can be even said that agile project management made it possible to finish big IT projects that otherwise could never end...
