What foreigners think about living in Serbia? How is life in Belgrade, Serbia as a remote worker? In this video me and my international colleague, Tal, from Support Adventure chat about life in Serbia and, of course, Tal's experience in this country. He has been living here for a while and has a lot of great experiences with Serbia and its people.

Serbia is a country that was demonized for decades in the whole world. Besides Russia and Middle Eastern countries, Serbia is probably a country that has been presented in the darkest light in the American media and Hollywood movies above all. That is why people like foreigners here and are curious about them, because the Serbs are not used to someone liking them, they are used to prejudice and hatred sadly.

You are very nice people, and because of that I need to tell you that Kosovo’s real name is Kosovo and Metohija, second part of the name - Metohija can be translated as land owned by monasteries and churches under the Serbian orthodox Church real estate system since 14th century. Metohija is actually bigger part of Kosovo and Metohija. Western media “somehow” forget this fact.
Kosovo and Metohija is part of Republic of Serbia. 🙂

27:13 Haha, you don't need to "count" anything if you don't eat meat, who told you that? :) I'm from Belgrade and I've been vegan for the last 25 years, and from my experience being vegan in Belgrade isn't difficult or complicated at all. The food I'm interested in is cheap and easily available and I definitely don't count calories, proteins, vitamins or anything else and despite that I'm perfectly healthy. And I'm not weak either, I can do pull-ups and stuff like that, just like a "normal" Serbian guy. :) Yes, there are less meat and cheese substitutes available in the supermarkets comparing to the Western Europe, but this type of food is highly processed, usually not particularly healthy and it's definitely not necessary. I mostly stick to unprocessed foods and buy majority of my food at Zeleni Venac and similar markets and health food stores which you can find at every corner. Overall, I would say that Belgrade is a fairly vegan-friendly city. I think foreigners get a wrong impression that Serbian cuisine is exclusively meat based because they go to restaurants a lot and we don't have many fancy-ass vegan restaurants like Berlin for instance. However, typical Serbian folks very rarely eat at restaurants and if you look at the stats, average meat consumption per capita is way lower in Serbia than in Germany or the USA. Serbian Orthodox Church is pretty strict when it comes to fasting and there are about 200 days during the year where adherents are required to eat exclusively vegan (with the exception of fish), so plant-based food is also a big part of Serbian tradition along with animal-based meals. If you see in a food store that something is labeled as "posno/посно", that basically means it is vegan. And on another note, f*ck the EU. I hope Serbia will never join.

About why are Serbs so welcoming. I think it's a bit complex but I will try to give you some reasons for it, in my opinion of course.
Traditions. Being a good host is deeply rooted in Serbian tradition, from the time we accepted Christianity or even before, it was believed that any guest might be, and now legends vary, St Sava, Jesus, God, Holy Spirit or your dead ancestor so you should treat any guest accordingly, especially if they come to your house. To be a good host is to give your guest all the best you have. As recent as few decades back it was common in villages that people have a guest room which is the best room in the house, with best furniture, ornaments etc. So you even had people sleeping in beds mad of straw who had a guest room with all the best stuff available...
Economy. We are still relatively poor nation and people don't travel as much, so meeting foreigners is good window to the rest of the world.
Recent events. We had a lot bad propaganda against us as people and our country so people here are excited to show that that isn't true.
Patriotism. People often see themselves as representatives of our nation and we think that being good towards foreigners is patriotic thing to do, especially proving western propaganda wrong.

Kosovo is Serbia, that's why Serbian people doesn't want to join EU
And why Kosovo is "independent"
It is because of mines full of lithium (battery product) and U.S. have control over it.

Good video and discussion. If Serbia managed to grow and improve its infrastructure so far without the EU membership, then it should stay away from joining the EU. Serbia should stay diplomatic with the west, but also stay as independent as possible and continue doing business with Russia and China. It was not too far long ago in 1999 that pretty much everyone turned its back on Serbia and Serbs should not forget that. Be nice with its neighbors and everyone, but continue focusing on national interest and its citizens for a better future.

Shortly , Serbia is excellent place to live if you have money flow from somewhere else so you don't have to WORK in Serbia . Government of Serbia probably introduce that opportunity to become Serbian citizen by buying real estate property because every year about 65 000 Serbs (mostly young people ) go to some other countries in search for good paying jobs (including myself). Serbia right now is going nicely forward and me as a Serb hoping it will continue that way unless " BIG PLAYERS" in the world decide that it's time for another WAR in the "BALKAN POWDER KEG". Unfortunately many times those big players push Balkan people into senseless wars and we were stupid to do it . Hopefully Serbs and other people in the region finally learn the lesson . Just one question : Would Switzerland or Canada be what they are right now if they had a wars every 50 years like Serbia and they have to start from zero every 50 years ??? Belgrade was destroyed many, many times . 1941 destroyed by Nazis ,1945 by Red Army and Americans to kick out Germans . Cheers from Serb in Canada.

Interesting conversation, thanks! Avala and Kosmaj are mountains just nominally, without a real mountain feel, more like big hills. There are fantastic mountain hikes, very diverse, just look for mountaineering sites/Facebook pages for very popular day-excursions. Best rule of thumb is to explore and/or join a local who can provide good quality info.

I didn't know that in Germany you need to make PCR tst in order to go to hair dresser... I always considered those people a little sick...
Nicely said... in Serbia( Balkans) people live in order to live, not in order to work, like in Germany or in "developed world".
Belgrade was not part of Austrian-Hungarian empire ;)
Some economic experts wouldn't agree at all that it would be good for Serbia to enter EU... En contraire... they would say it would be catatrofic for serbian economy...

Yeah, Serbia and balcanic countries are not so multicultural like Amsterdam/ Germany and other "developed world", so foreigners are still considered exotic... and Russians are considered more like brothers than like foreigners...
In Serbia bars opened until 20h only? haha... In Croatia until 22h....:D :D

To add some interesting information, which maybe you didn't know... Sweden, Belarus and Bosnia Herzegovina didn't have at all covid madness restrictions or had minimum of minimum... still, In all european countries people followed orders form the government, except in Italy. Italians massivly opened bars and restaurants evan government didn't allow it... Itlians are most freeedom fighter people in Europe. :) when we talk about covid madness restrictions...
Yeah, on Balkans we don't care so much about rules and discipline...

Belgrade people are well known for putting accent on being relaxed and humor.

I was thinking, maybe if in Serbia salaries are like in Germany, nobody would live in Germany... haha.... I'm just being mean now... I don't know if I succeded to comment on everything I wanted. You said a lot of information.

City of Subotica have around 100,000 today, just to correct him saying it has 20k. But he was close to the truth, Subotica at the beginning of 20th century had a larger population than Belgrade, but Belgrade experienced big growth after it became the capital of Yugoslavia in 1918 (from 80k in 1914 to 350k before WW2 started), and Subotica from a major town in big Austro-Hungary empire became border town but it still remained important in Yugo era and now.

It is such a wrong and inappropriate to see New Belgrade as some communist/socialist/soviet look like city as it have nothing to do with it. "New Belgrade developed on Le Corbusier's principles of the "sun city", which includes many green areas and infrastructure which can easily be upgraded. In general, city developed in the style of urban modern architecture and is considered to be a major representative of that style, along with Brasilia in Brazil, Chandigarh in India and Velenje in Slovenia." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Belgrade https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Corbusier

The question is what cheap means and what you expect from the aera you life. Is the money you get for your work low as well as the costs of living. Vienna is more expensive of course, but i can do a lot of things as well on a high standard and very dependable and with an annual pass you use the public transportation for 1Euro a day and that's definitely cheap for the size of the city.
Serbia was a country behind the Iron curtain and has a different history, so the change to higher European standard is obvious, you can see that in Poland, the Czech Republic and of course in former East Germany. Berlin is the city that is never finished in total and if you could see older pictures and what it looks like now it's very different. But not every part of a city or country will change, that's the kind of identity you have for a lot of places.
A lovely friend lives in the city Olomouc in the Czech Republic, you can see all the different influences as well, modern buildings with a lot of glass, beside of an old train station in a more typical communist style with a red star in front of the building.
And why should somebody like to change the beautiful city centre of Vienna, it's also an important view into the past, it's a cultural treasure. Buildings that offer art in different ways designed hundreds of years ago as one of the oldest cities in the world. Use the things you have and music has a long history in Vienna and offers a lovely feeling with a well educated crowd listening to you. Millions of students from around the world come to Vienna for a reason. A lot of cities in Europe are more diverse than a lot of people would think about. And every country, every region has his pros and cons and it's on us the find the best for living and it's on us how welcomed we are feeling.

Sorry but you (your guests too) are completely disconnected in regards to Serbia and its foreign and domestic politics, standards, people, etc. I don't know what locals are feeding you with, but it is pretty useless. I wouldn't even know where to begin regarding everything said in the video. I hope you'll learn if you stay longer. But that would require reading on it and not consuming local media. I wouldn't lean much on locals too and on foreigners who spent time here especially.

@Dragan L There is no such possibility since I invested a lot of my time to inform myself on the topic. And even if I didn't bother at all, I would still know way more than an average foreigner who decided to give it a go in Serbia just a few months ago. Regarding locals, vast majority knows nothing about politics which is confirmed through elections and general position the country is in for the last 20-30 years.

Why life in Serbia is better? I will explain in this video.
Not many people consider Serbia as a place to live or even to visit, let me convince you that this country (and in a particular city of Belgrade) deserves your attention and time.

Recently I moved to Belgrade, Serbia after spending here last summer and being impressed by the city and country, people, and the atmosphere. However, you need to take into account that I am Russian and this place close to my heart, it can be different in your situation. For this reason, you should spend here a couple of months before moving to figure out if you like this country.

Fun fact: it is because the country is a mobster communist country, and cops produce drugs on plantations (Jovanjica) and murder people for fun, son of police chief murdered two people on sidewalk with 100000 euro audi and minister came to ensure all security camera footage was dleted. That is the only reason why the Ustashi occupator did not burn. And the fact this "russian" loves this comment proves she is the enemy too.

@SeRBrighter UnAgainst I can confirm that we here in serbia are quite more liberal than the other balkan nations and really don't mind about LGBT. This is our path to future and into europe.

A couple of hundred thousand ukrainians and russians could save Serbias demographic disaster. At the same time we would have people willing to work and study, we have the same religion and similiar language. The serbian government should do like Poland and also use its position outside the EU.

I've visisted Belgrade back in 2016, but only for 5 days. I liked it more or less. Of course food etc is cheaper. Waages are lower too though. You have some nice old buildings, but also some not so nice-looking ones from the Communist era. Also some destroyed buildings back from NATO strikes in 1999 were still visible. Of course it has a certain vibe and also attractive women I have to say 😉 On the other hand, I think it would be very hard for me to learn the language which is probably much easier for somebody from Russia. OK, maybe most can understand English, but I still think is better to know the local language of a country you living in at least a bit.

Dead Anna, you made the point. This Is a very special country, and old European nation. Belgrade Is a very special capital as well, with a particular wibe and atmosphere. I travelled a lot across Europe, and yes the cities are Beatiful, but usually ded, like candies, like museums at the open air. People here are alive and that Is rare in Europe. They still resist and.do not want ti be modelized and nstrumentalized. Always criticize others and ourselves. Anna, I Wish you to become a Serbian Citizen. A lot of foreigners have already got the Serbian passport. P.S. Check the medievale fortresses and monasteries in Serbia, Roman Empire localities, Serbian spas and Winter ski resorts. I Wish you to find your count Vronsky Just like in Anna Karenina by Tolstoy, where Serbia mentioned.😊 Greetings from Vracar, Belgrade ❤️

37

Чев

@Aleksandar Kralj

11

Mario Petrinovic

Zapravo, morao bih se ispraviti. Ta crvljiva nije zadnja klasa, ona je ispod zadnje klase. Vani to daju svinjama.

Lol. A kad ga pitas sto to tocno tamo ne valja, onda postaje pjesnicki raspolozen. U zivotu nije pjesmu napisao, ali sada mu stihovi naviru sve u 16. Pjeva li, pjeva.

Veoma iskreno i emotivno kazivanje vaseg iskustva u tudjini. Nemojte ni jednog trenutka zaliti sto ste ponovo u Srbiji.
